The Claddagh ring (Irish: fáinne Chladaigh) is one of Ireland’s most treasured symbols, representing love, loyalty, and friendship. Its timeless design features two hands holding a heart topped with a crown—the hands symbolize friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown stands for loyalty.
Originating in the historic fishing village of Claddagh, just outside the medieval walls of Galway City, the ring first appeared during the 17th century. Today it remains one of the world’s most recognisable pieces of Irish jewellery and a lasting symbol of Irish heritage.
The History & Origins
Galway has produced Claddagh rings for more than 300 years. Among the earliest known makers was Bartholomew Fallon, whose surviving rings date back to the late 1600s.
The best-known legend tells of Richard Joyce, who was captured by Algerian pirates, learned the craft of goldsmithing while in captivity, and created the first Claddagh ring for the woman he loved back in Galway. After his release, he returned home, married his sweetheart, and became one of Galway’s most celebrated goldsmiths.
Whether fact or folklore, the story has become one of Ireland’s most cherished romantic legends.
The Design of the Claddagh Ring
The Claddagh ring evolved from the European Fede ring, a style of jewellery dating back to Roman times. The phrase mani in fede means “hands joined in faith” and symbolised trust and lifelong commitment.
The Claddagh ring expanded this design by adding a heart and crown, creating a powerful symbol of friendship, love and loyalty. Modern designs often feature Celtic knotwork, further celebrating Ireland’s artistic heritage.
